Global uncertainty surged after February, driven by the West Asia crisis, pushing fuel prices higher. The MPC wisely retained status quo. CPI inflation is pegged at 4.6% for FY27, while growth faces downside risks from $85 oil and weather uncertainty, making projections fluid and revision-prone amid persistent global and domestic volatility.

Cross-sectoral trends and outlook

US-Israel strikes on Iran and Tehran’s retaliation, including Hormuz disruptions, threaten India’s trade with West Asia. Higher freight costs, supply delays, energy risks and inflation could weaken consumption, posing downside risks to ICRA’s FY2027 GDP growth forecast of 7.1% significantly.

Oil & Gas

The Strait of Hormuz is critical, carrying about 20% of global petroleum liquids and LNG. Prolonged closure or producer disruptions, with Qatar and UAE relying solely on this route, could trigger global supply shortages and sharply escalate energy prices worldwide further.

Economic Outlook & Macro Trends

Despite favourable January–February indicators, prolonged West Asia conflict risks India’s outlook via higher energy costs, supply disruptions and import dependence. GDP growth may slow to 6.5% in FY2027, inflation risks rise, prompting an extended MPC rate pause with RBI liquidity support.
